Apples are a great choice as one of your babies first foods. They are full of nutrients and rich fiber. They are easy to prepare and easy to digest, and babies just love them in any food combination because of their sweet taste. Combined with baby rice and yogurt this puree will become a firm favourite!
3 cups of sweet apple, peeled, cored and diced into small cubes
3 - 4 tablespoons of baby rice
½ cup of water
½ cup of yogurt
Small pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Peel and core the apple and cut into small cubes;
Use the steaming function on your steamer blender, steam the apple for approximately 6 - 8 minutes or until soft;
Take out the basket(s) and remove the water (keep water to one side);
Blend 3 tablespoons rice cereal with 1 cup of water in a small saucepan; stir over medium heat until mixture boils and thickens. Cool to room temperature.
Place the soft apple, baby rice and yogurt into the jug and blend with the nutmeg if you are using it. You can add small amounts of the saved water until the desired consistency is met (smooth for younger babies, leave more coarse for older babies);
Portion into reusable baby food pouches;
Serve with a food pouch spoon.
Apples are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol and a great source of dietary fibre. In addition, apples contain vitamin C as well as polyphenols which function as antioxidants.
Yogurt is an excellent choice for one of your baby's early foods because it contains nutrients such as calcium, protein and vitamins. The best option is plain, unsweetened yogurt (regular or Greek) made from whole milk and containing live-cultures or probiotics which are good for your baby’s digestive system.
