Taking to the skies with your baby for the first time can feel like an overwhelming task. You’re not just managing your travel, but also ensuring your little one is comfortable, entertained, and calm throughout the journey.

With the right preparation and mindset, however, it can turn into an adventure rather than a headache. Plan well, and you’ll avoid most of the common pitfalls that can make flying with a little one stressful.

Here are seven essential tips to help you navigate flying with your baby, so you arrive at your destination with your sanity intact!

Tip 1: Plan Ahead

The earlier you start planning, the smoother your journey will be. Begin by booking the right seats—many airlines offer bassinets or bulkhead seats for families traveling with infants. Call ahead to confirm availability, as these spots fill up quickly.

If your baby requires formula, breast milk, or specific baby food, check the airline’s policies on liquids. For international flights the Qantas website notes that passengers travelling with infants and toddlers are permitted to carry a reasonable quantity of liquid’s for the child but that  “reasonable quantity” will be at the discretion of the security screening officer at customs.

Other websites such as the TSA website do note that more than 100ml of liquids can be taken in your carry on baggage for the use of your child. So don’t worry you don’t need to portion 100ml into each of your baby bottles!  Fill them up with pre-sterilised water in advance if formula feeding.

Additionally, if your trip is international, ensure your baby has a passport and any necessary vaccinations.

Tip 2: Pack Wisely

Packing light is a luxury you may need to forgo when travelling with a baby on a plane.  However, thoughtful packing can prevent unnecessary stress. Your carry-on should include:

  • Enough nappies and wipes to last the flight, plus extras in case of delays.
  • A change of clothes for the baby—and for you, in case of unexpected messes.
  • Pre-sterilised bottles filled with pre-boiled water or sippy cups depending on your baby’s age and needs as well as single serve sized reusable food pouches or pre-prepared snacks.
  • Baby formula, portioned into single serves in a formula dispenser
  • A portable travel bottle warmer + charger and power bank.
  • A blanket or swaddle for comfort and temperature control.
  • Basic medications or teething gel, just in case.
  • A small first-aid kit.

Keep all baby essentials in an easy-to-reach bag and consider organizing them in smaller pouches for quick access.

Tip 3: Choose the Right Flight Time

Timing can make a world of difference when flying with a baby. If possible, book a flight that aligns with your baby’s sleep schedule. Overnight flights or flights during naptime may increase your chances of a peacefully sleeping baby.

On the other hand, if your baby is more likely to be restless during long stretches of quiet, a daytime flight where you can keep them entertained may be the better choice. Assess your baby’s temperament and plan accordingly.

Tip 4: Bring Entertainment

A bored baby is often a fussy baby. Bring a selection of toys, books, or comfort items that your baby loves. New toys can be especially effective as they pique curiosity. If your baby is old enough, small snacks can also double as entertainment.

For older infants or toddlers, consider loading a tablet with kid-friendly content and headphones designed for little ears. Many parents find that the novelty of screen time during flights can work wonders.

Tip 5: Be Prepared for Takeoff and Landing

Takeoff and landing can be uncomfortable for babies due to changes in cabin pressure.

You may be wondering how you can protect your baby's ears while flying?

To help ease the discomfort of ear pressure, encourage your baby to swallow during these times.

Breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or offering a pacifier can all help. If your baby is older, a sippy cup or even a small snack can work.

Start offering these items during the descent as well—this is often when ear pressure is most noticeable. And if your baby gets fussy, remember that crying can also help them regulate the pressure in their ears!

Tip 6: Consider Baby Gear

Traveling light may sound appealing, but the right baby gear can be a game-changer. Many parents (including me) swear by baby carriers for navigating the airport hands-free, especially during security checks.

For long flights, a compact travel bassinet or inflatable footrest can make your baby more comfortable, giving them a place to stretch out and nap. Just confirm with your airline if these items are allowed.

Remember that most airlines will allow you to check gate check baby gear such as strollers and car seats at no extra cost, saving you from lugging them through the terminal.

Tip 7: Stay Calm and Positive

Let’s face it: one of the biggest stressors for parents flying with a baby is the fear of being “that parent” with the crying child. It’s important to let go of this worry. Most people on the plane are understanding, and some may even offer a kind smile or words of encouragement. For those who aren’t? That’s on them, not you.

A proactive approach can help: a friendly “Hi, we’re traveling with a baby today—thanks for your patience!” as you settle into your seat can go a long way in setting a positive tone with your neighbours.

And if your baby does cry, remind yourself that it’s normal. Crying is how babies communicate, and as long as you’re doing your best to soothe them, there’s no need to feel guilty.

Take a deep breath and take off!

Flying with a baby might seem daunting at first, but with preparation, patience, and a touch of creativity, it’s entirely manageable. These moments, as challenging as they can sometimes be, are also opportunities to bond and create memories.

So pack those baby essentials, take a deep breath, and embrace the adventure. Before you know it, you’ll be touching down at your destination, ready for the next chapter of your journey as a family. Safe travels!
