You’re probably thinking ‘what is a baby fresh food feeder’ and ‘do I really need another baby gadget’? In this article, we will explain what a baby fresh food feeder actually is and why it will become your most favourite baby feeding tool.
What is a baby fresh food feeder?
A fresh food feeder is basically a little pouch made of mesh or silicone, that allows your baby to chew on solid foods without the risk of choking. It’s not a new concept. Before we had an actual gadget, mums used to use cheesecloth to make small pouches to fill for baby to chew on. We take chewing for granted, but it actually takes a lot of coordination, strength and endurance of the muscles of the jaws, cheeks and tongue. These aren’t skills and strengths your baby is born with, they need to develop through practice.
A baby fresh food feeder allows baby chewing practice by enabling you to offer different textures, sizes and shapes of foods that they otherwise might not be ready to safely eat.

When is it appropriate to start using baby fresh food feeders?
Baby fresh food feeders can be used as a useful tool when your baby is starting solid foods. Most babies will start showing signs that they are ready to start solid foods once they are 4-6 months of age. These signs include:
- Your baby can sit upright with support (e.g. in a highchair);
- They have good head and neck control;
- They show an interest in food, such as watching you eat and reaching for your food;
- Your baby opens their mouth when presented with a spoon.
Baby fresh food feeders are also a great way to keep your baby busy. It will become a go-to tool when you need a few moments to yourself or just to have some peace and quiet.
What should I put into a baby fresh food feeder?
A baby fresh food feeder is so easy to use. Simply fill with fresh cut fruit, vegetables or ice and let your baby begin to taste & chew whole foods without the risk of choking on large pieces of food.
Here are some suggestions, but don’t limit yourself to this list, go ahead and experiment!
- Raspberries, fresh or frozen,
- Strawberries, fresh or frozen,
- Blackberries, fresh or frozen,
- Melon,
- Banana,
- Mango, fresh or frozen,
- Frozen grapes,
- Roasted sweet potato,
- Roasted butternut squash,
- Ripe fresh pear,
- Fresh cucumber, skin removed,
- Cooked red meat such as steak.
How do I clean a baby fresh food feeder?
Simply wash the mesh of your fresh food feeder with warm soapy water before use and after each use. For the more stubborn bits, try using a bottle brush or just running water to clean out the mesh. It should be fairly easy to clean if you avoid letting it sit too long with food in it!
Self-feeding skills development
A baby fresh food feeder supports the beginning of independent feeding. They offer an easy to grasp handle and need less co-ordination than your baby trying to manage a spoon. As the food is contained within the mesh, there is less mess too. Your baby can quietly, and happily, suck and chew while developing the necessary self-feeding skills
Helps with teething
Baby fresh food feeders are the perfect tool for easing sore gums caused by teething.
For young babies who haven’t started solids, you can simply fill it with ice, frozen breast milk or formula. For an older baby, or toddler who’s started eating solid foods, frozen fruit is a perfect baby mesh feeder filler. The cold will soothe your child’s gums without them having to do too much work.
